The Serie A club have agreed a £4.5m fee with Liverpool for the Italian defender, but the player's wage demands appear to have caused the problem.
"We have taken a break in order to reflect on this," said Napoli's director of sport Pierpaolo Marino . "The move is on hold. There are no immediate prospects.
"The president has spoken to Rafael Benitez and there is some distance between us and the player. But I wouldn't worry too much."
