Rafa refuses to give up

By Adam Bryant
Wednesday, 4th November 2009
Rafael Benitez praised the character of his Liverpool team, despite their 1-1 Champions League draw with Lyon which leaves them unlikely to qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament.
"We had some chances but to concede a goal in the last minute is really, really unlucky," said Benitez after the game.

"With all the problems we had we showed character and the team was doing well so its really positive the response from the players and just disappointing with the last goal.

Substitute Ryan Babel scored a scorcher for Liverpool which looked to be the matchwinner until the home side's last minute equaliser.

"Ryan is the kind of player that can change a game because he has the pace and the ability," added Benitez. "He's a good player for us in some situations and we want to see the best from him in more games."

"It depends on Fiorentina and Lyon now, so we have to win our game and go into the Fiorentina game. If they draw or lose we will have to win and score goals.

"The people realise we have some problems and they can see today the character of the team and that we were much better, and that can happen in football.

"The main thing is the reaction from the players - they were trying to win from the beginning and I think that's the most important thing for me."
